Research survey for the development of a carbon calculator for schools

School Carbon Calculator

In the 2023/24 academic year, Keep Britain Tidy and Eco-Schools, supported by Let’s Go Zero, will launch a free-to-use online carbon footprint calculator for schools. This calculator will map a school’s carbon impact across all three emission scopes. Schools will be able to input their information and data to generate a bespoke carbon emissions report and a carbon reduction plan.

If a school is unable to provide a particular data point on the carbon footprint calculator, an average figure for a school of its type and size will be used. To establish baselines and set these averages, we ask schools to take 15-30 minutes with their site and business managers to complete our data survey. The answers will help make the calculator as accurate as possible.

Throughout this survey, If you are unable to answer a question, please select “I don’t have this information”. Don’t worry, understanding what you can and cannot answer is also useful to us!

To help you complete the survey, you’ll need access to the following:

  • Utility bills (electricity, gas, water)
  • Information on your school trips this year (locations, pupil numbers)
  • Student and staff commuting information
  • Canteen purchasing
  • Procurement of other things

Please note that your data will be stored locally in the cache for 30 days. This allows you to return and edit your information at any time, as long as you access the webpage on the same browser using the same internet connection and the cache is not cleared.

However, it is important to remember to press submit at the bottom of the form; otherwise, we will not be able to use any of your data!
